Requirements for Kendo Leaders
- Strive to cultivate the mind as well as train in the skills.
- Be a living example.
- Day and night, be thoughtful in how to lead the students.
- Lead according to the ability of individual student.
- Teach correctly.
- Differentiate how “in-house” student (you must be responsible for everything and “visiting” student (responsible as a Kendo practitioner are taught.
- Teach and guide correct theories.
- Teach in steps from general to specifics.
- Correct bad habits.
- Allow correctly executed strikes, but never allow incorrectly executed strikes.
- Encourage good points, especially for beginners.
- Utilize the student’s good points, and allow his/her character to shine.
Requirements for Promotion (6, 7, 8 Dan)
- Posture, Form, Kamae
- Key points: ready stance (attention, immovable, energy, beauty, back side, holding Shinai, Kamae.
- Effective Strikes
- Key points: crispness of Waza, sound, posture, sharpness, Zanshin, momentum/power, distance Maai.
- Luck: environment/location, opponent, individual judges’ values are not exactly alike.
- Other: study about judging and judging standards.
